I am Jehovah and there is no one else; Besides Me there is no God…

Isaiah 45:5a

Lesson 9

There is Only One God

Elementary

Verse: “I am Jehovah and there is no one else; Besides Me there is no God…” (Isaiah 45:5a).

Focus: There is only one God—Jesus Christ. Other things are not God. Only Jesus Christ is God.

Practical Application: It may be helpful to bring in several items such as a stuffed animal, a statue, or a picture to show the children. Consider asking the children whether that item could be God, and indicating how silly it would be to pray or bow down to it.

Intermediate

Verse: “…We know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one” (1 Corinthians 8:4b).

Focus: An idol is an object or an image of something that is worshiped like God. But idols are not God and we should not worship anything other than God.

Practical Application: Things that apparently represent God, such as a cross, an image, a figurine, a statue, etc., are considered idols. These idols are dumb—they cannot hear, speak or answer any requests. We do not pray to idols. God is a living person, and as God’s children we can pray to Him. He hears our prayers and He can answer them.

Advanced

Verses: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Him whom You have sent, Jesus Christ” (John 17:3). (Memory verse)

“To the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord…” (Jude 1:25a).

Focus: There are not many gods or other gods. Other religions claim to believe in a god BUT the Bible tells us that there is only one true God and He is Jesus Christ. God wants people to know Him as the only God and not to have any other gods.

Practical Application: The Bible tells us that there is only one true God. He created the heavens, the earth, and everything else, including us. This God is Jesus Christ. We should know this God and not believe in any other gods or idols, which are all false. It may be helpful to tell the children the story in 1 Kings 18:21-39 to show that only God is the true and living God.
